Data used to produce this dashboard is updated daily from the Alabama NEDSS Base System (ALNBS), Alabama's disease reporting and surveillance system and the Alabama Incident Management System (AIMS).

How To Use The Dashboard: This dashboard is best viewed on a desktop computer using the Chrome browser. If viewing it on a mobile device, we recommend viewing it in landscape mode (horizontally). The default view is statewide data. On the list on the left, click on a specific county to see county-level data. Click again on the county to un-select that county or click on another county or Alabama. You can maximize any of the graphs or boxes by hovering your mouse over the top right-hand corner of a graph or box and clicking the circle with four arrows. To minimize the graph or box, click the same circle icon. The index of tab contents in on 2 – Index. Identify the tab number that corresponds to the content for which you are interested, and click on that number tab at the bottom of the middle section.

Cases – the total number of confirmed and probable cases. Cases are classified using the CDC case definitions. Confirmed cases had detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) ribonucleic acid (RNA) in a clinical or autopsy specimen using a molecular amplification test. Probable cases: 1) had SARS-CoV-2 detected using an antigen test* OR 2) is known to be a close contact to a COVID-19 case or was known to be part of an exposed group and meets clinical criteria OR 3) COVID-19 was listed on their death certificate as an underlying cause or significant condition contributing to death. *If someone meets probable criteria 1 or 2 but has a negative molecular amplification test (e.g., PCR, NAAT, RNA) within 48 hours of the positive antigen test, they are not a case. \nDeaths – the total number of deaths among confirmed and probable cases. Deaths that meet laboratory or vital records criteria not previously identified as cases are added to the case total.

\nMoving 7-Day Average – the average of new cases for the previous 7 days. The moving average is used to identify trends by smoothing small fluctuations over a period of time.

% Positivity in Tests - the percent in positivity tests is calculated by taking the number of positive nucleic acid amplification tests in the past 7 days over the total number nucleic acid amplification test performed in the past 7 days.

NAAT or Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests - a type of viral diagnostic test for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. This test detects genetic material known as nucleic acids. NAATs for SARS-CoV-2 specifically identify the RNA sequences that comprise the genetic material of the virus. For more information see the CDC website.

\nTab 3 - Statewide Percentage of Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests (NAATs) that were Positive During the Past 7 Days
\nThis graph shows the 7-day percentage of positive COVID-19 viral diagnostic tests and number COVID-19 viral diagnostic tests performed. Only nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT) methods are included in this calculation. A NAAT is a type of viral diagnostic test for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. NAATs detect genetic material (nucleic acids) of the virus. The date is assigned by specimen collection date and represents the percent that were positive during the past 7 days as of that date. Note that a previous day’s data may change as reports from providers may be delayed.

\nTab 5 - Comparison of Data Trends – When Case Occurred Versus When Case Was Reported
\nThese graphs visualize the importance of using the correct date to determine trends in new cases. The “Date Case Occurred” represents when the case was most likely ill and/or infectious. The “Date Reported” represents when the case was reported to ADPH by the provider. Hovering a cursor over a line or bar will display an exact value. ADPH uses the Date Case Occurred for monitoring COVID-19 cases and trends as it is a more accurate representation of disease transmission levels in the community than the Date Reported.

\nTab 6 – Daily and 7-Day Moving Average Number of New Cases
\nNote: Alabama or a county must be selected from the list on the left. This graph shows the number and 7-day moving average of COVID-19 cases by the Date Case Occurred. (Hovering a cursor over a bar will display an exact value.) Gray bars represent the number of new cases each day for the state or selected county of residence. \nThis graph shows the daily number of COVID-19 patients in Alabama as reported manually by hospital staff each day. The blue line represents the number of COVID-19 hospital patients. The black bars at the bottom of the graph represent the number of hospitals that report at least one COVID-19 patient each day. There are 123 total acute and specialty care facilities in Alabama, of which 98 are acute care hospitals. (Hovering a cursor over a point or bar will display an exact value.)

\nThis map shows sites in Alabama conducting viral testing to detect SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Information includes days and hours of operation, an address, and a phone number to call for more information. These facilities have reported to ADPH that they are collecting specimens to test for COVID-19. This list and dashboard map may not reflect all collection sites in Alabama. Call the testing site for additional information before visiting.

Tab 11 - Geographic Distribution of Variants in Alabama in the Last Four Weeks
\n\nThese charts and map shows the distribution of variants by Alabama Public Health District for the past 4 weeks and use the CDC classification and definitions. It is important to note that a relatively small proportion of tests performed in Alabama include sequencing to determine the variant. Current descriptive and clinically-relevant information on the individual variants can be found on the CDC Website.

\nThe Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) developed the dashboard for COVID-19 data in an effort to inform the public regarding the impact of this pandemic on the citizens of Alabama. The dashboard, as with any other technology, periodically experiences issues that delay visualization. Overall, intermittent problems related to the dashboard are not unexpected, given the volume of data and need to revise ways in which data is presented. In addition to correcting any technological issues, ADPH will occasionally delay visualizing data, as well, until numbers can be reviewed or confirmed. ADPH relies heavily on outside entities to report data correctly and timely. However, this is not entirely under ADPH control. Educating outside entities regarding data transmission processes is an ongoing activity. All data is preliminary and subject to change. ADPH values accuracy and is confident in the integrity of the data being presented.

\nThe Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) receives reports of testing for SARS-CoV-2 from commercial and clinical laboratories as well as our own Bureau of Clinical Laboratories (BCL). While ADPH has long term reporting relationships with many labs in Alabama and other states, new labs have begun to provide testing for SARS-CoV-2 during the COVID-19 pandemic. There have been instances where ADPH was not aware of some of these laboratories, and these labs were not familiar with mandatory reporting of notifiable diseases. When ADPH becomes aware of a new lab performing SARS-CoV-2 testing, ADPH educates the labs regarding uploading data in a timely, accurate electronic format. As these labs were not reporting to ADPH until they understood the requirement, their data contains older reports which increases case numbers. ADPH continues to make all efforts possible to identify new labs and bring them into the electronic reporting process in order to capture the positive and negative labs for case investigation and data accuracy.

\nThe Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) has experienced a few instances where commercial labs, when transmitting electronic lab data, provided results denoting positive labs when the reports were, in fact negative. ADPH was able to expediently see that this was an aberration, due to the large volume of reports and notify the commercial lab to take corrective action. In such cases, due to the rapid response of ADPH, no patients were notified of incorrect results. In addition, as newer laboratory entities have come on board, there are instances where reports are missing data, so the ADPH system does not accept the reports without further review. Integrity of data is extremely important to ADPH, and our team works diligently to provide the most accurate and up to date information possible. This requires an ongoing team effort to make corrections and ensure the best product possible.

\nThe Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) receives reports of deaths from our Alabama Center for Health Statistics (ACHS), as well as, from hospitals, coroners, and other entities who send records to ADPH. Reviewing data is a standard process for ADPH in COVID-19, as well as other notifiable diseases. When a death occurs in a person who tested positive for COVID-19, the record is reviewed by an Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) physician to determine factors related to death and any comorbid conditions. This investigation must be completed before any death is included in our official data. ADPH follows the guidance of the National Vital Statistics System (NVSS) and the CDC. There may be delays in death reporting due to receiving information from hospitals, coroners, and other entities who send records to ADPH. Upon further investigation, some deaths may be removed from the data count, as there may be duplicate records, deaths that were reported as COVID-19 but are found not to be attributable to this virus, or in rare instances, a death may be reported and the person is not deceased. ADPH strives to present the most accurate data reflective of the current state of the pandemic in Alabama.

Any update you may see on Tab 7: Daily Hospitalizations of COVID-19 Patients may be partial. We expect there will be a lag in reporting from November 25-28 due to the Thanksgiving holidays. \n\n\t\t\t\n\n\t\t\t November 15, 2021 - A laboratory mistakenly reported all previously reported COVID-19 positive and negative results to ALNBS on November 9 which slowed down the system and prevented it from processing reports from other labs. ADPH does not have control over when results are reported. \n\n\t\t\t\n\n\t\t\t The Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) receives reports of COVID-19 through our Report Card as well as the ALNBS system. When some entities enter the facility name by free text, the system may not pick up the name if there are hyphens or other characters that do not match. When the system does not recognize the name to match to the CLIA, the report is rejected. CLIA is a required field for the laboratory report to be added to the system and counted as a case. ADPH is reprocessing some data to ensure accuracy of reporting of cases. This reprocessing could result in additional cases added to the case count. For information related to when a case occurred versus when the case was reported, please view Tab 5. \n\n\t\t\t\n\n\t\t\t The Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) is now receiving reports on COVID-19 variants automatically, providing us with near real time data on Tab 11. Therefore we are seeing an increase in the number of variants from the past 4 weeks. \n\n\t\t\t\n\n\t\t\t September 15, 2021 - The Alabama Department of Public Health received 515 positive lab reports from two entities which mistakenly listed 2020 instead of 2021 for the date of the patients' onset of illness. The correction to the year has been made in the Alabama NEDSS Base System (ALNBS). These changes can be seen in case date changes on tabs 5 and 6 and in case totals for 2020 and 2021 on this dashboard as of September 15, 2021. August 24-25, 2021 - The Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) is experiencing technical difficulties with the Alabama NEDSS Base System (ALNBS), Alabama's disease reporting and surveillance system. As a result, ADPH is unable to provide case data until this problem is resolved. ADPH is working diligently to resolve this issue and appreciates your patience. \n\n\t\t\t\n\n\t\t\t August 23, 2021 - The Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) reviews COVID-19 data on a daily basis with multiple goals in mind. For our publicly facing dashboards, ADPH works to provide the most meaningful data in a concise form in order to inform and educate. In refining data and ensuring clarity, ADPH has determined that the Moving Seven Day Percent Change in Cases is not a useful metric for the dashboard, as testing and reporting delays can significantly alter this metric. As of August 23, 2021, the Moving Seven Day Percent Change in Cases has been removed from the dashboard. Please refer to Overall Level of Community Transmission for an overall view of COVID-19 disease in Alabama and by county. \n\n\t\t\t\n\n\t\t\t August 21, 2021 - Today's update will occur in the afternoon. Please check back later. Due to a technical issue, not all of our August 18-20 lab reports were being processed. Therefore cases and tests reported on August 19-20 were lower. The issue has been fixed. Today's numbers include cases and tests reported from the previous two days. \n\n\t\t\t\n\n\t\t\t August 14, 2021 - The ALNBS received necessary maintenance. As a result, this dashboard will not update. Thank you for your patience and support! \n\n\t\t\t\n\n\t\t\t August 12, 2021 - ADPH revised the calculation for when a case occurred. We did this to better account for reinfections. A reinfection is defined as a positive test after 90 days of a previous infection. These reinfections were always included in our case count but have been placed in time based on when their reinfection occurred. These changes can be seen on tab 5, tab 6, and case totals for 2020 and 2021. \n\n\t\t\t\n\n\t\t\t August 8, 2021 - This dashboard will not be updating today.
